Candlemas sneak peek...

It's a funny thing...mostly over the years my turns of phrases and references are becoming more and more Orthodox but in my head the "The Feast of The Presentation of Christ in the Temple" is still "Candlemas".

We went candle shopping this week but all of our little local places were cleared out during the holiday season, we were only able to snag a pillar and a few little votives.

I really prefer to buy locally made stuff and was not sure where to look but I dug out a little box of candles marked "Hanukkah" candles we had picked up at the co-op last year and use for various feast days projects . (Like Holy Innocents)

The box said Big Dipper Wax Works and is based out of Seattle.

Not county local but still regional . I ordered off their "clearance/seconds" list but everything is lovely. Of course being beeswax they smell lovely, they are even and smooth but the best thing was they also came wrapped in tissue and paper shreds- zero plastic wrap or foam bits! Yay Big Dipper! Plus the order came super fast and had free matches and a pack of honey candy thrown in. Highly recommend them!

We will have lots of candles now to decorate for the year and to use in our icon corners and to share with our fellow parishioners. It is one of the kiddos favorite feast day projects. I will take another pic when we get them all ready!

Birthday, Birds , Ballet, Barf Buckets...

My Beautiful Blue Eyes is Six! She has had a lovely week, sharing ice cream with buddies, hanging her very own bird feeder (tying perfectly in with our annual January bird study- thanks Sabrina!) testing out her brand new chalk pastels and starting ballet.

We also had our house blessing this week, always a lovely if tiring occasion. Blue Eyes got a few extra rounds of Many Years to her excitement.

Unfortunately Ferdinand is down with a sick tummy ...I will spare you the pictures of the barf bucket!

Coffee or Tea...

It turned out to be a sign making week for me. I have updated 4 pictures in our house. This little quote is  one my favorites and has been duct taped to the kitchen wall on a hand written index card for years...since I was already in the groove I whipped this one up today.

There was an amusing tongue in cheek post on the Well Trained Mind Forums in the Orthodox Social thread where some of us Orthodox mom's postulated we could solve denominational differences in our down time...if only we could solve the "great debate" first.

Alas it is a problem even in my own family!

Most Glorious Orb!*

A perfect way to start the new year in the PNW!
A dry sunny day.
The kids were still hacking and snotty but were finally fever free and mostly cheerful.

After a quick shout of "Thank you for the SUN!" out the window, we bundled up extra warm and went out to the bike path.

Blue Eyes was thrilled with her first chance to tackle "Big Hill" on her brand new first ever bike!

We only had about 15 minutes before the coughing kicked in and Ferdinand went into a hive attack from the cold air (gotta convince him to wear a ski mask!) but everyone came in smiling.

A lovely new year!

* poetry geek points if you know the reference :)
