Ferdinand has been working through a Main Lesson Block on Measurement.
We began by spending a day just talking about what and why and how we can measure. We read some books and made up stories of our own. He was particularly struck by Samuil Marshak's version of the The Month-Brothers reading it several times on his own after we had finished reading it together.
Ferdinand is a kiddo that began telling time at 4 and has been checking and rechecking the calendar on a twice daily basis for years. He counts out his change and calculates his savings on an almost daily basis and frequently spends time measuring distances with daddy for various table top games so we really did not need a Main Lesson to learn or reinforce these skills.
With Iddy Biddy this Main Lesson was all about practicing math skills and practical experience with measurement but for Ferdinand it has been a quiet block, lots of time curled up on the couch reading with mom. It has been a very story oriented. It shouldn't keep surprising me how differently my kiddos approach their lessons but it does.
He has been doing some writing for me and while it is disheartening to see the regression in the level of his written work from last year I know how difficult producing anything is for him right now. I am trying to be supportive in allowing him to write what he can when his hands are co-operating and am so grateful once again that we are homeschooling and he can continue learning even when his health is a challenge.
