What Valentine does during learning time...

Everything I feel when asked about Blue Eyes and school is doubled when asked about Valentine.

But I got asked again this week when he would start preschool- as if  my older home schooled kids were not standing there ;)

So I made a little collage of things my sweet just turned 3 year old does during "school".

What Blue Eyes does during learning time...

When people ask what I do with Blues Eyes for  "school" I cringe, I am never sure what to say...She's 5 I don't do a whole lot of "school" with  my little ones.

But we read and have lots of tea parties and dolly picnics. We have pretend doctor visits and sing off key and read some more. And I spend hours cleaning up the disastrous messes creative activities that occur when I'm working with the older two.

Really she has a lot of time just to play. While with my first child I was so much more worried and stressed about "child development" and "educational milestones" by kiddo #3 its easier to trust my instincts and let her just be a little child.

It doesn't mean she is not busy or learning however...just that Mommy has learned to back off! Lately she has been going though reams of paper, making cards for friends and family, stapling together homemade coloring books, drawing hundreds of self portraits and just this last week she has taken to using inventive spelling and has been writing a lot. It is something Iddy Biddy did a lot of starting around her 5th b-day as well.

Blue Eyes has asked me to post some pictures of her "work" for her Grandparents so here you are!

Solvitur Ambulando...Goodbye old pants!

Solvitur Ambulando..."it is solved by walking".

This quote is taken way out of context but is my among my favorites and hangs above my door. I hung it there just about 16 months ago, the day after Christmas.

I come from a family of fat and a family of athletes and depending on the season fat athletes. Due to asthma and chronic pain since childhood I never had the athlete part down. Briefly way back in high school I began a habit of daily walks and took up weightlifting...even then at my most fit I was very, very curvy but I hurt less, I felt good and was pretty happy with my body.

16 months ago I sat at the kitchen table in the pre-dawn, trying to keep a newly weaned
Valentine quiet, staring out at sheeting rain. I was crabby, wearing too tight jeans and a ratty nightie. I was hurting a lot, not feeling good and very much not happy with my body which was in turn unhappy with the wiggly, groping, snuffly baby on my lap.

I just desperately wanted it to be sunny, to be warm, to have clothes that fit, and to have good shoes or even to just have a rain coat so I could go outside and walk and be alone for 5 minutes! But none of that was going to happen and I was really mad, just like I had been for weeks.

Dh came down to make some coffee and I handed him Valentine and announced I was leaving...for a walk! Dh having been married to me for 15 years wisely just smiled and said "have fun!" I pulled on wool socks and my worn out sandals and Dh's rain coat. And I left and walked and walked until I was soaked through and sore and out of breath which did not take long.

16 months later I am still walking sometimes in the morning or in the late afternoon. Whenever I can squeeze it in but every single day, six days a week, rain, sun or snow. I am still not an athlete and I am still very, very curvy, but I hurt less, I feel good, I breathe easier and that makes me very happy and makes me a happier mommy too.

My relatives often remark that there are never any pictures of me, I tell them that's because I'm always holding the camera. It is only partially true though, I really hate having my picture taken, even if my sweet dh cherishes each one he manages to snap. Well yesterday I bought a pair of jeans...I thought the occasion merited a picture.

We will just all pretend I combed my hair OK?

Those are not actually my too tight pants from 16 months ago, those are the in-between size I got 9 months ago! I have had them safety pinned up the last few months to stay on...I really needed this new pair and am proud to have it.

So to you all Solvitur Ambulando!

Happy walking!

Pascha Snapshots...

Pascha was a week after western Easter this year which somehow we did not realize! So many apologies to my family and friends who received late greetings.

We did not get many photos this year but we had such a lovely Pascha. For the first time Ferdinand was able to serve at the Vigil Service. The kids did great, Ferdinand  got  a bit wobbly around two a.m. but Father gave him a juice box and he was back in action. Valentine slept the first half of the service and Blue Eyes mostly went from various "Aunties" and "Uncles" 'till their arms gave out. No one's hair got singed and Valentine did not repeat last years disastrous attempt at fire eating! Yay!

We rolled in home about 4:30, such a long night! We all got 4 hours of sleep before Valentine woke up but Iddy saved the day by putting on a Veggie Tales video and reading to him so Mommy and Daddy could get an extra hour of sleep before getting up to make breakfast. All the kids were very happy to see the return of bacon! :)

Hoping everyone is having a joyous Pascha/Eastertide!

Enjoying the Spring!

Wheely fun!

Elven Adventures!

Even the "neighbors" are enjoying themselves!

Trickster Tales...

Ferdinand has been working on a MLB of Trickster Tales, his always favorite Anansi the Spider stories and some Reynard the Fox tales. He was a bit skeptical at first about Reynard but says "they are almost as good as Anansi". :) He has slowly been adding more and more sentences to his work and is now up to about 6-8 sentences with minimal fuss. He has that late spring b-day which makes things tricky grade wise, slow starting in the Fall but big strides in the last quarter of the school year.

More US Geography Block...

We have been mostly snuggling up with books, looking at maps while story telling, and cooking with this block. Iddy has been making more of a scrapbook than a "traditional" main lesson book. It's progressing well and we are both enjoying it.  After reading about the Rockies and hearing a story about a cattle drive Iddy spent a lot of time roping and wrangling siblings and pulling them around the neighborhood in her "chuck-wagon".

We are also doing a lot of math review in order to try and bring her up to level in skills, slow going but progress is happening so we do try not to worry!

Math is one area where Iddy Biddy is too like mommy!

She has been getting a kick out of my attempts at the maps- many apologies to the Texans for shrinking your state!

Many Years Ferdinand!

The little man who loathes outdoor activity asked for a skateboard for his b-day!
He is getting pretty good but  has several fist sized scabs and bruises. :(
Thank goodness for helmets!
And what special day would be complete with out mythical warriors hmm?
He and Valentine have been having giant battles with griffins and dragons.
Many Years! We can't believe you are 8!

Giant Jungle Gym!

An old oak came down in our neighborhood after the snow storm. It was an exciting adventure, Ferdinand (who usually needs a pep talk and a crow bar to get him out of the house) grumped the whole way there, then ran like a wild man for an hour and was disappointed to come home. We lucked out that we went to explore the first day as the very next morning it was roped off with danger signs.
